A strong story keeps viewers watching and coming back. Videos with the most watch time always include storytelling elements. Share a story that relates to the problem that brought viewers to the video.

  • Make your characters relatable – People should see parts of themselves in your video.
  • Shared beliefs – These are the purpose and values that will bind your community. What are you trying to do?

  • Overcome an obstacle – Characters in a story need a challenge to overcome. The challenge or obstacle should be relatable to your audience.

For example, MrBeast has one of the largest channels on YouTube with 66 million subscribers. His videos use storytelling to get millions of views.

In his videos, MrBeast and his friends perform ridiculous stunts and give away huge amounts of cash. While the situations are extreme, the characters are all down to earth. They seem like normal people that most viewers can relate to.

MrBeast is a comedian, all his videos are elaborate jokes. There is a shared understanding with the audience that this is all for a laugh and good fun. On another channel a video where you handed out thousands of dollars to strangers, or buried yourself alive would be jarring. Viewers would be so confused! It makes sense for MrBeast because his viewers know what he is trying to do.

In every video, MrBeast has a clear challenge that can be explained in a few seconds. For example, he is in a store and will pay for all the products that a person he is with can gram within 60 seconds. The video is all about overcoming that obstacle.

Find characters, beliefs and obstacles that resonate with your audience. Once you have a winning formula, just repeat it in video after video like MrBeast. To build a strong brand, you need to tell consistent stories over and over again.

Happy Storytelling!
