How to find video topics that attract viewers.
Want to grow your YouTube channel? To find an audience, you need to make videos on subjects that lots of people are searching for but there are not lots of videos for.
Of course you want to pick a topic that people are interested in. But too much competition and you won’t show up in search results.
Here is the best way I’ve seen to find winning video topics…
First, as you develop content ideas, make sure to do simple keyword research. You want to make videos that people are interested in. Below are three of the tools that we use to check whether a keyword is popular.
Keywordtool.io
Answerthepublic.com
Google Trends
Second, you want to target low-competition keywords. This is ESPECIALLY important if your channel doesn’t have that many subscribers. If you swing for the fences and go after competitive keywords, your video is gonna get buried in the search results.Instead, you want to find keywords that don’t have a lot of competition. How do you check?
Go to google.com and search ‘site:youtube.com title:keyword’ so if your keyword is ‘urban farming’ search for ‘site:youtube.com title:urban farming’. In the results you can see how many videos are currently on YouTube for that keyword.
There is no magic number of videos that determines whether a keyword is competitive or not. But the fewer videos out there for a given keyword means less competition for your video.
With the above two tactics, you can quickly see whether a keyword is popular AND whether there is a lot of content already made for it.
I’d suggest you make a big old list of possible video topics. Use the above tools to see if the topics are popular AND if there is competition on YouTube for them.
Use the results to rank your topics and pick the best one for your next video!
